I nearly died!!

I was in the kitchen minding my own business and cooking dinner. Just being a good mom and caring for my family. I heard a buzzing behind me and the sound of a bug bumping into walls. I didn't pay it too much attention because: 1. we have plenty of big, dumb bumble bees around here and 2. if I turned around every time I heard a bug I'd be pretty dizzy.

But then as I was working I caught sight of the insect that was causing the disturbance and I lost it completely. I ran screaming out of the kitchen yelling for my son, Timmy to come help.

Take a look at the picture below and tell me you wouldn't have done the same thing.

Timmy, good boy that he is, came running to help his mama and grabbed a spray can of poison. This is when the 'fun' started.

I was still hysterical and yelling. Timmy began spraying the air trying to catch the bug in mid-flight as it careened around the kitchen. Of course he was mostly missing because aerosol spray is not known for its aiming properties.

During all this I continued yelling: "Don't spray the dinner! Watch out! You missed it! Oh, Timmy, be careful. Get it! Don't spray so close to the food! Oh, careful!"

At this point, Timmy turned to me and said, "Do you want to do this?"

Me: "Ok, I'm being quiet now."

The bug then flew into our dining room. We have high ceilings and he was keeping out of the way by flying around the fans. Timmy began leaping up and spraying at the same time. Have you ever seen a 6 foot teenage boy do flying ballet-leaps around a room while spraying poison? It's very entertaining! I would have laughed out loud if I hadn't been such a basket case.

He finally trapped this insect-from-hell near the curtain and sprayed the heck out of it. Finally it fell to the ground and lay twitching.

Just so you wouldn't think I was exaggerating I had Tom put a crayon next to the demon bug for scale.

Both photos were taken by Tom. There is no way on God's green earth I could get close enough. Anyone have any idea what this is? We've never seen it before.

  1. I'm pretty sure it's a horsefly. They have a terrible sting... You were right to be scared and staying far from it...

  6. Finally i found what this insect is! We've seen them plenty of times before, but never had a clue about the ID. It happens to be a weta (spec.). Totally harmless.
